Visit to Bergen County Jail

Prep students were privileged to get a tour of the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack. Lt Damian Pope led off the presentation with his story of emigrating from poverty in Trinidad and Tobago, so grateful to be in America that he joined the Marines. His path in the military evolved into a highly successful career in law enforcement as he is now the OIC of the Bergen County Police Academy in Mahwah. He gave us a little taste of what it is like to be a recruit! Lt Pope had many interesting stories, including those as an undercover detective. We then had an eye opening tour of the facility thanks to Officer Romero, who showed us the courtroom, booking, maximum security, drug rehab, and more. It was impressive to see the coordination and teamwork it takes to successfully run the jail. We are also very thankful to Chief Madden and Sergeant Ponder for the efforts to coordinate our visit - so many takeaways - and why not finish with ice cream on an 80 degree fall day!
